Liverpool move for Sancho dismissed by James Pearce

The Athletic’s Liverpool correspondent, James Pearce has poured cold water on the possibility of the Reds making a bid for Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho this summer, per a Mailbag article.

What’s the word?

Sancho has been in electric form for Dortmund this season, scoring 17 goals and registering 19 assists in 35 games in all competitions.

The Daily Mail claimed in February that the Reds had shown an interest in signing the England international in the summer, along with Manchester City, Chelsea, Manchester United, Real Madrid, and Barcelona.

Pearce, though, says that such a bid is unlikely, given the likely cost of prising the 19-year-old away from Signal Iduna Park.

He said: “Jadon Sancho would cost around £120 million and I just don’t think Liverpool would pay that kind of money for someone who wouldn’t walk into their starting line-up.

“(Timo) Werner is a cheaper and more likely option.”

No clues: Can you name the season these iconic Liverpool images belong to?

Don’t need him

Liverpool are probably one of the only clubs in Europe without the need to bring Sancho into the club.

They have Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah, and Roberto Firmino, and that front three are unlikely to be dislodged anytime soon.

Whoever comes into the club, as an attacker, is going to have to be absolutely world-class to force Jurgen Klopp to transition away from that trio.

Sancho, of course, is a sensational talent and has been in genuinely incredible form in recent months but he has yet to prove that he can do it for multiple seasons on the bounce.

Thus, a move at a cost of over £100m is unnecessary at this stage.

The Reds, as Pearce suggests, should swerve this move.

Meanwhile, Liverpool’s potential move for a big-money ace could cause problems for Jurgen Klopp!
